Submission Guidelines

Looking for a place to submit your poetry and pinhole photography? Pinhole Poetry reads submissions on a rolling basis. In the body of your email, please include a short bio and any social media accounts or personal websites you want to share. We don’t want to discourage anyone with a lot of rules, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

For poetry submissions

NON-THEMED ISSUES: Please submit up to five poems. Epic poems have their place, but it probably won’t be here at Pinhole Poetry. We encourage you to submit poems that are no longer than two standard pages. We will consider and challenge ourselves with poetry that falls anywhere on this spectrum:

Lyric |——–|——–|——–|——–| Narrative

but the poems that we gravitate toward usually fall somewhere between the first and third tick. Want to know more about what we publish? Visit our archive to get an idea. Only send previously unpublished poems (that includes work published on your own website or to your instagram/twitter account). Use a legible 12 pt font. If you have special formatting requirements, please make note of it in your submission email.

Please state in your cover letter email if you are open to editorial guidance on your submitted poems. This guidance is limited to poems that we want to publish. You can choose different answers for each poem you submit, but please make it obvious to us which ones are open to advice. Don’t be afraid to say “No thanks, not for me.” Trust your poem and your own instinct. Answer honestly. You do not have to accept all suggestions, but it does mean that we’ll work toward something together and we expect the working relationship to be kind, patient and cooperative on both sides. This way, if a poem is perfectly done in your opinion, but still not quite right for us, we’ll know to let that poem go.

Simultaneous submissions are fine, but contact us as soon as possible if your work is no longer available. We try to respond to all submissions in 4-6 weeks. Please send us a follow-up If you have not heard from us in that time frame. If we accept your work, please allow nine months from publication before you submit to us again. If we said ‘no’ to your work and didn’t specifically ask you to send us more, please wait six months.

For pinhole photograph submissions

Only send work for which you hold copyright in jpeg format. Please include a title for each work, an artist statement (if it’s a series), and the type of camera, film/paper and exposure time if you have that information.

Submit your poetry and pinhole photography to submissionspinholepoetry@gmail.com along with a cover letter that includes a third-person bio. Your attached files must be titled with your last name: PinholeLASTNAME Attachments must be .doc or .docx for poetry (or pdf if there are special formatting rules) and jpegs for photography. Submissions that do not follow these guidelines will not be considered. We will read one submission packet from an individual poet once every 9 months. If you send more submissions than that, they will not be read.

Pinhole Poetry pays an honorarium to each contributor ($5 CAD), but we’re happy to reinvest it back into the upkeep of our website and development projects if you so desire. We share contributor work on all of our social media platforms and invite all interested contributors to be featured on our Interviews page.

To become a member of the Chapbook Love Letter Club

We’d love to feature reader responses to recently published poetry chapbooks (excluding Pinhole titles). In terms of length, we’re looking for responses between 300 and 500 words. It’s okay if the chapbook has sold out or is otherwise no longer available for sale, but we do ask that you send reviews for presses that are still operating. We’re hoping this initiative might encourage more engagement with the amazing work that is being published in chapbook form, especially in Canada, but also in the wider world. If you have work you think would be a good fit, email us at pinholepoetry@gmail.com with the subject line ‘chapbook love letter’ and please include a third-person bio and your response as an attachment.

Thank you for submitting. We can’t wait to look at your work!
