JACOB MCGUINNESS

a collection of 323 individual exposures with strobe on Arista 400,
using a 4×5 homemade pinhole camera
ARTIST STATEMENT / I started to make my own cameras in 2022 and it has completely reshaped my studio practice and altered the way I understand photography. I build cameras to fracture, repeat, divide, and warp, cameras to explore the self and to emphasize the meditative act of photography. This new practice has given me a way to dream, play, and look more openly.
For this piece, I made a pinhole camera with 323 individual apertures to examine complexities of portraiture, identity, and multiplicities of the self. I hope this exhaustive portrayal fosters a sense of intimacy in what is revealed, while still pointing to the vast, often inaccessible nature of our internal lives.
